Caring for our volunteers during lockdown

As an essential service, Optimal Clinical Trials has remained open during Covid-19 lockdowns. Over the last 18 months we’ve put every effort into building and refining procedures and processes for the safety of our patients and our team.

For Angel, Research Nurse and Study Co-Ordinator at Optimal, it is as much about making the visit as enjoyable as possible for our volunteers while rigorously following Covid-19 protection protocols.

"We’ve found that our volunteers are as happy to see us as we are to see them. Some of our clinical trials have been going for many years and we do get to know our volunteers very well - they become friends. It’s a welcome opportunity to re-connect and get an update on how they’ve been, as well as to provide trial medical care.

Sometimes instead of face-to-face visits, follow-up phone calls can be an option and again it’s a nice chance to catch up and see how they are doing. We make sure to allow enough time to talk about their well-being as well as to update their progress on the study."

"We do have very strict procedures to follow at our clinic, from COVID-specific questions prior to their appointment, meeting our patients in the car park; providing hand sanitiser and masks and doing health screens at the front door, through to rigorously sanitising all surfaces after visits. Within the building we practice safe distancing and our clinical team wear masks and gloves for health consultations. Also, we provide our volunteers with travel documentation to ensure that their trip into, and home from, our clinic is stress-free."

As part of the Optimal team for the last 3 years Angel says that she loves her job because she feels that she is making a difference.

"Being part of a team that is helping to develop new medicines and improve medical conditions is my daily motivation. Many of our volunteers feel exactly the same way and want to ‘give something back’ to future generations or just help people with similar conditions to theirs. I really enjoy people and it’s a pleasure to be able to welcome our volunteers and give them the best experience possible, even during these challenging COVID times."
